As practitioners we are all well aware of the physical gifts Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives our bodies.
It is great exercise and when we eat right we see a transformation in our physique. However, the physical aspect is not the only thing influenced by Jiu-Jitsu:
The mind is also transformed by training.
How so, I bet you’re asking? And my answer would be that Jiu-Jitsu is good for your mind in many, many ways. The first of which is that it helps lower our stress levels. Exercise in general has been proven to release the hormones that help reduce stress level and Jiu-Jitsu is no exception. However Jiu-Jitsu takes this a step further. Because Jiu-Jitsu is our passion we are able to reduce our stress levels while doing something that truly makes us happy.
Another way Jiu-Jitsu is good for our mind is in the challenge itself. The entire journey throughout our lives we are challenged.
Jiu-Jitsu is a puzzle and we are forced to problem solve on a daily basis.
Problem solving is the exercise of the brain.
Problem solving has been shown to increase brain productivity on a general level.
The third and probably most well-known benefit to our mind is the destruction of our own self-image and ego. Leave your ego at the door is one of the first things you are told upon starting your Jiu-Jitsu Journey. We are constantly beat by people we may not expect it from and we learn to accept ourselves regardless of what happens.
For me the last and most important reason Jiu-Jitsu is good for our mind is the discipline and respect it teaches.
In so many ways the discipline and character of anyone who practices Jiu-Jitsu is challenged and formed.
We learn to respect not only our instructor but all of our teammates.
We learn to respect the hard work behind every belt.
We learn that everyone has their own struggles and problems in life, but we all are there for similar reasons. There is no way around it, if you hope to reach black belt in our art it is going to require a lot of discipline. Along the journey there will be days where we don’t have it in us, but show up anyhow. There will be days when we have our own personal problems in life, but will have to take time to help our fellow team mates. The list can go on and on, but I think you all get my point.
Jiu-Jitsu is good for both the body and the mind. It can help manage our stress levels and increase our brain productivity and problem solving skills. It helps us manage our own self-image, teaches us respect and gives us a discipline that cannot be leaned any other way. No matter how you slice it, Jiu-Jitsu is good for the mind.
Now go step on the mats and make yourself the person you want to be!
