4 Reasons Jiu Jitsu is Cooler Than Other Team Sports

Many Jiu Jitsu athletes have come from other sport backgrounds and some even continue to enjoy other sports while being a bjj athlete. This is not a bad thing at all, but Jiu Jitsu is definitely better than any regular sports team. First I want to dispel the belief that Jiu Jitsu is a one on one sport. While this is true you are still part of a team and you have coaches and teammates just like every other sport. So here are the top reasons being part of a Jiu Jitsu team is better than being on any regular sports team.

No Off Season

First, there is no “off season”. While there are times with more tournaments than others; we always have an opportunity to test ourselves.  Imagine if your only opportunity to compete was Jan-June. How much would that suck? This is the case in most other sports, but not Jiu Jitsu !

More Ceativity

Second, we are allowed much more individual creativity than in other sports. Think about all the different positions and games we can play. Now think about going to a tournament and having to fallow only the “plays” your coach called. This would put such a damper on the way we showcase our talent. While we do have coaches at tournaments’  they are more there for support than to actually direct you what to do.

Closer Bonds

Third , we bond with our teammates and coaches on a much more meaningful level than in other sports. Like I said earlier we have no off season where we aren’t competing or training. Jiu Jitsu is a life journey and many of our teammates we see every day for years and years.  Not only do we spend more time together, but the very nature of our sport calls for a certain level of trust. Our sport is such an intimate one where we are touching each other and trusting each other not to injure us or themselves.

Better Life Style

And last I want to talk about the overall life style Jiu Jitsu brings us into. The longer you train the more good habits you tend to develop in terms of overall health (as a generality). We learn how to eat right and eat better foods (Acia…) . The more dedication you bring to Jiu Jitsu the more this becomes true. The really dedicated athletes will even avoid alcohol and especially drug use because it could slow down their athletic performance (although there are exceptions).  This is not even touching the amount of personal development Jiu Jitsu can bring us in ways many other sports just can’t.

So while other sports teams are great to be a part of; being part of a Jiu Jitsu team is 100x better !
